Sue Smalley is a pioneering scientist, writer, and entrepreneur whose work intersects the worlds of behavioral science, mindfulness, and social impact. As Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Science at UCLA, Smalley spent three decades focusing on genetic influences in behavioral disorders such as Autism and ADHD and contributed to over 100 peer-reviewed publications. She later expanded her research to mindfulness and wellness, founding the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center, and co-authoring Fully Present: The Science, Art, and Practice of Mindfulness.  Additionally, she has written extensively on happiness and well-being for platforms like Huffington Post and Psychology Today.

As a leader in both science and business, Smalley transitioned from academia to entrepreneurship by co-founding PTK Capital, a Los Angeles based family investment fund dedicated to building companies that enhance the human condition. Her deep scientific expertise and passion for creativity inform the investment approach, driving innovation in both the business and social impact sectors.

In recent years, Smalley has expanded her focus to include writing books and scripts that explore themes of well-being, human connection, and creativity. Through her creative work, she continues to use storytelling as a transformative tool to inspire change.

Smalley is also a co-founder of the Bedari Kindness Institute at UCLA, which seeks to integrate science and social impact in spreading kindness. She serves as the chair of the Institute’s Executive Committee, leading efforts to drive its mission forward.  She also serves as an emeritus board member of Equality Now, a global organization advocating for women’s and girls’ rights. With a unique ability to blend science, creativity, and kindness, Smalley is making a lasting impact across business, social justice, and creative sectors.
